Wood accent table, 'Past and Present Unity' (Ghana)

Ghanaian artisan Joseph Boateng crafts a unique accent table rich with West African symbolism. Hand-carved from native sese wood, the pedestal of the table features three figures holding hand in a circle, symbolizing unity. The tabletop bears the sankofa symbol, which depicts a bird with its head turned backwards getting an egg off its back. Sankofa translates to reach back and get it, and is a traditional Asante adinkra symbol. Adinkra symbols are visual icons created by the Asante peoples of Ghana; they typically represent concepts or aphorisms.
